Leadership Corner: Introduction to Design Thinking

Greetings from the Leadership Development Committee! For those of you who are not familiar with the Committee’s work, we seek to develop leaders for the Association, our organizations, and our community. We hold workshops on leadership throughout the year. We also encourage each other through sharing articles, podcasts, blogs, and books on leadership. Abbey Rhode and John Goetz III of Clean Water Services (CWS) will present our approach of combining engineering, ecology, and partnerships to remove a channel spanning fish passage barrier in Gales Creek known as the Balm Grove Dam. Our technical approach includes detailed project monitoring and data analysis, academic research (eDNA and soils), extended site preparation, funding acquisition, embracing stream function, collaborative contracting as well as hosting multiple public meetings. Using data to drive project management decisions we are refining our approach by combining engineering and ecological disciplines in streams with cobbles, gravels, and fine-grained, cohesive clay soils and hope to share lessons learned along the way.

World Water Day – Bringing People Together to Celebrate Knowledge and Good Beer

What a wonderful sight it was on March 22nd at Optimism Brewing as over 70 people split into teams in a (mostly friendly) battle of wits covering obscure waterways, water-based music, and what WSP stands for. We saw connections being made across the water industry and beyond that we rarely get to see outside of the PNCWA Annual Conference, all while raising more than $4,000 for Water For People. Thank you to our wonderful host, Optimism Brewing Company, and our generous Sponsors AECOM, Schnabel, WSP, Osborn Consulting, Stantec, T.Y. Lin, Carollo, and Consor, as well as our prize sponsors Rey Amargo Chocolate, Overcast Coffee and Elliott Bay Books.

Committee Spotlight: Stormwater - Projects Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill in the Pacific Northwest

On November 5, 2021, the U.S. Congress passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. Since then, the federal government has provided funding for various infrastructure projects. In the Pacific Northwest, funding has been awarded to projects that improve access to clean drinking water, provide access to reliable high-speed internet, repair and rebuild roads and bridges, improve multimodal transportation, upgrade power infrastructure, and provide forest fire protection.

Information on the breakdown of funding given to Idaho, Washington, and Oregon can be found in Part 1 of the blog post series here: Committee Spotlight: Stormwater (pncwa.org)

World Water Day 2023: Wednesday, March 22

World Water Day 2023 is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis worldwide. Water is a core element of our survival. Yet, in our PNCWA area, it’s easy to take water and wastewater for granted — we don’t think about the infrastructure, people, and administration that strives to deliver clean water anytime we want. While throughout the world, there are billions of people that don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water or sanitary services.
